Bacon Pizza

Few things in life can beat the combination of pizza and bacon. A layer of cheese and layers of bacon strips make an unforgettable meal or snack. Some like to cut the bacon into small pieces while others enjoy the long strips when they bite into their pizza. Bacon bits can also be added to a pizza loaded with other ingredients like ground meat, sausage, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, and pineapple. To make the most out of bacon, however, it is best to enjoy the crisp strips as simple as possible with mozzarella, cheddar, Parmesan, goat’s cheese, or Gruyere.

There are many versions of bacon pizza. Some like to add caramelized onions for a sweet and tangy contrast to the salty and savory bacon. Bacon strips can be sliced into two or into one- to two-inch pieces so that they are easier to arrange on the surface of the pizza. Avoid clumping or overlapping, so as to prevent the bacon from cooking unevenly. Some people like to cook the bacon before topping it over the pizza to get some of the grease out, as uncooked bacon baked in the oven with the pizza can turn into a pool of oil on the surface of the cheese. Cooking the bacon also allows you to control how crispy you want it to be, but be sure to undercook it so that it fill finish crisping in the oven for a perfect texture. After cooking the bacon strips, lay them out on a paper towel to absorb the grease.

For gourmet versions of bacon pizza, consider adding slices of apples to balance out the saltiness. Top with a soft cheese like Brie or Camembert for a fancy treat.
